How validation works

  1. For EU 27 numbers: we POST to VIES, the European Commission's free VAT-number validation service. VIES returns valid / invalid and (depending on member state) trader name and address.
  2. For GB-prefix numbers: we call HMRC's UK VAT check service. Since Brexit, VIES no longer covers GB numbers.
  3. VIES has rate limits and occasional outages. If the service is unavailable we return an explicit "service unavailable" state rather than guessing.
  4. VIES confirms registration for intra-EU trade. It does not confirm trading status, financial standing, or fitness for any particular contract.
